Naomi Graetz: In Shakespeare's Hamlet, when Marcellus says, "Something is rotten in the state of Denmark," he is speaking of political corruption. The house of Denmark is in a state of rot. I see the rotting house as a metaphor for both sinning Israel and its leaders — then and today. The plague is manifested both without and within. If the rot settles too deeply to be purged, as in Hamlet, heads will fall and there will be collateral damage.
Michael Barclay: This week's Torah portion of Vayera (Gen. 18:1-22:24) has one of the most important teachings found in Judaism, or any authentic faith tradition. From this we learn that hospitality can lead to miracles and blessings, while rejecting hospitable behavior can lead to death and destruction.
Ephraim Mirvis: In the parsha of Metzora, we are introduced to the fascinating subject of צָרַעַת הַבַּיִת - leprosy of houses. So why did such an awful scenario take place? The Midrash, and the Gemara Masechet Arakhin, suggest that this came as a punishment for people who didn't engage in the mitzvah of הַכְנָסַת אוֹרְחִים, of hospitality.

מַלְאָךְ אַחֵר עֹלֶה מִמִּזְרַח־שֶׁמֶשׁ
"And I saw an Other Angel having ascended from the Rising of the Sun having the Seal of the Living God and he cried in a loud voice to the four Angels to whom it had been given to them to harm the Earth and the Sea saying, 'Do not harm the Earth nor the Sea nor the Trees, until we shall have sealed the Servants of God on their foreheads.' And I heard the number of those having been sealed: 144,000 having been sealed out of every tribe of the Sons of Israel" (English Translation of Revelation 7:2-4).
Michoel: Rabbi Chaim Vital writes in Shaar Hamitzvos (Parshas Shemos) that the Arizal warned against pronouncing the names of angels aloud. He explains that this is because when the angel hears his name being called he is required to come down. When the angel sees that he was summoned unnecessarily he becomes upset and can accuse the person.
Fyodor Lukyanov: The question of Russia's integration into the Western-centred system is no longer on the agenda. In Moscow, this opens up opportunities, but it also means the need to revise some familiar assumptions.
